Understanding the Role of the Douglas County Attorney
– My Vision for Service

My goal is a justice system that protects our community, respects due process, and earns the trust of every resident.
One of the most important things voters can do is understand what the Douglas County Attorney actually does. It’s a big job with wide-ranging responsibilities that directly impact our safety, our families, and our local government. As someone with decades of hands-on legal experience, I want to share what I see as the path forward.
By state law, the County Attorney serves as the chief prosecutor for Douglas County. That means handling felony and gross misdemeanor cases, prosecuting crimes in unincorporated areas, and working closely with law enforcement on charging decisions that always consider victims’ perspectives while upholding justice.
Beyond prosecution, the office manages child protection cases to safeguard abused or neglected children, enforces child support orders, handles civil commitments, guardianships, and provides essential legal advice to the County Board, departments, and even the hospital. The County Attorney personally manages high-level felonies and office operations while Assistant Attorneys support the full caseload.
In my years practicing law, including criminal, family, and child protection matters, I’ve seen how these responsibilities play out in people’s lives. I’ve represented clients in difficult situations and mediated resolutions that prevent unnecessary court battles. This experience has prepared me to lead the office with both firmness and fairness.
Here’s what I will bring as Douglas County Attorney:
Accountable Prosecution: Prioritizing serious crimes, repeat offenders, and drug-related threats while using smart diversion where it truly serves justice and frees resources.
Victim Support: Ensuring victims have timely information, a voice in the process, and real assistance navigating the system.
Strong Partnerships: Working hand-in-hand with the Sheriff’s Office, city law enforcement, and community organizations to prevent crime and address root issues like mental health and substance abuse.
Efficient, Stable Office: Focusing on retention and support for staff so we have experienced prosecutors who stay and serve Douglas County long-term. Our office should be a place of excellence that attracts and keeps top talent.
Sound Legal Advice: Providing proactive guidance to county leaders so we avoid problems and make decisions that benefit taxpayers.
I believe the County Attorney should be accessible, ethical, and results-oriented - not political. My goal is a justice system that protects our community, respects due process, and earns the trust of every resident.
If elected, I will hit the ground running with practical experience and a clear commitment to Douglas County values. I invite your thoughts on these issues. What matters most to you when it comes to safety and justice in our county?

Let’s keep the conversation going.
Stephen Knudsen
