Who I Am and Why I’m Running for Douglas County Attorney

Hello, neighbors. My name is Stephen Knudsen, and I’m running to be your next Douglas County Attorney because I believe our community deserves strong, experienced, and compassionate leadership in our justice system.

I’ve lived and worked in this area for years, raising my family here and building a legal practice that serves real people facing real challenges. After earning my Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in 2004, I’ve spent more than two decades as an attorney handling everything from criminal law and family matters to child protection cases, estates, trusts, and civil litigation. I’ve worked as a judicial law clerk, an associate in a local firm, and now through Knudsen Law Firm, LLC. I’m also a Qualified Neutral Mediator, helping parties resolve disputes fairly and efficiently outside of court when possible.

What drives me to run now? Douglas County is a wonderful place - the lakes, the tight-knit communities, the hardworking families. But like many areas, we face ongoing challenges: keeping our families safe, supporting victims, holding serious offenders accountable, and making sure our County Attorney’s Office runs efficiently, so it can best serve everyone.

The County Attorney isn’t just a prosecutor. It’s a critical leadership role that involves prosecuting felonies and serious crimes, protecting children through CHIPS cases, enforcing child support, advising the County Board and departments, and providing legal guidance to keep county government operating smoothly. After seeing the demands of the office and the need for steady, experienced hands, I decided it was time to step up.

I’m not a politician - I’m a problem-solver. My mediation experience has taught me how to listen carefully, find common ground, and deliver practical results that respect everyone involved, while upholding the law.

As County Attorney, I will prioritize:

• Strong public safety through effective prosecution of violent and repeat offenders.

• Better support for victims and their families.

• Efficient office operations that retain talented staff and make smart use of resources.

• Collaborative partnerships with law enforcement, schools, and social services.
